Naxos Island ,the capital of Naxos island ,Naxos town :
Located on the Western coast of the island, the capital of Naxos is named after the island.
The main town and port is a mixture of Cycladic art and other architectural styles, deriving from different historical times. Naxos town is full of whitewashed houses, built around a hill that is dominated by an old Venetian castle, still used by the first inhabitants' offsprings.
Close to this Venetian castle, you will also find the archaeological museum whereas if you walk down to the port and face the town, on your left you will see what is left from the Archaic temple of Apollo, the famous 'Portara' (big door). The Portara is one of the island's trademarks and quite accessible through a pathway.
Naxos town has everything a tourist could ask for; a variety of accommodation, taverns, souvenir shops, bars, and easy access either to the beautiful, South beaches or to the more fertile North.
Both the island and its capital are recommended if you want relaxing, qualitative, and medium budget holidays.
