Xylokastro: This is a new municipality that spreads from the northwest foothills of Kyllini up to the coast of the Korinthian Gulf. It’s an important resort only 42klm northwest of Korinthos on the old highway to Athens near the river Trikalitiko. The big beach and the picturesque forest Pefkia near by, the hotels, the restaurants and the touri-stic facilities have made Xylokastro one of the most famous destinations. The maps during the Venetian domina-tion refer to it as Solokastro. But it’s almost certain that the importance of the fortification was meaningless becau-se the location was not in danger. It’s the home place of the Notara family who were landholders of the territory. The French traveller Pukefil wrote that Xylokastro only had ten houses. After the revolution against the Ottomanic dominance the name is heard more often. Since 1919 it was decided that would become a resort where only forei-gners would take their vacations. 1932 was the year that Xylokastro began rising in the preference of the public as a famous resort, when a touristic kiosk was built in Pefkia.
