The green island of Thassos is situated in the northern Aegean Sea, only a few kilometers off the coast of mainland Greece. It has a total area of 384sq. km. and a population of approximately 16,000 inhabitants. Mainly circular in shape, Thassos is mountainous and of volcanic origin. Worldwide known for its white marble, the island is surrounded by thickly wooded valleys, while its highest mountain is that of Ipsario, (1,203m. high).
Thassos justifies its title «emerald of the Aegean», having picturesque mountainous villages, magnificent beaches and very significant biotopes.
