The capital town is called Ermoupolis, being built in the hills surrounding the harbor.
The northern part of the island is mountainous, while the southern part is flat with many settlements, villages and beaches. Most of the villages are small and picturesque with a mixture of Venetian and Cycladic architecture. The beaches, a combination of sand and pebbles, are ideal for swimming with crystal clear waters.
The visitor can find here several hotels, cafeterias and tavernas, while one of its famous products are the so-called «loukoumia», (a sweet made of sugar and starch).
Nightlife in Syros is very active. Most of the clubs and bars can be found in Ermoupolis, particularly in the area of Limokathartiria. The town has also a big casino for those feeling lucky.
