The island of Sifnos is situated between Serifos, Kimolos and Antiparos, having a total area of 74 square kilometers. Its shoreline is 70km. and the population is no more than 2,000 inhabitants. The island with a triangular shape is mainly mountainous with hills and valleys covered in olive trees. The traditional white houses come together with picturesque churches, ( more than 200 in number), into amazing alleys. The beautiful, sandy beaches are ideal for swimming and relaxation.
The visitor can find here several hotels, commercial shops, cafeterias and tavernas. Nightlife is mostly found in the village of Kamares with beachside bars and discos.
Apollonia is the capital town of Sifnos, situated in the center of the island. Most of the town is set off small footpaths with all houses being built in the traditional Cycladic architecture. The closest beach of the area is that of Kamares, only 5km. away.
One of the main characteristics of the island, is the creation of chimneys made out of clay, called «flari». The art of pottery is a very long lasting tradition. Today, there are 16 workshops on the island. The local potters use the exceptional Sifnos clay and the objects made are of unique beauty. If you wish to see the different stages of manufacture, you can visit one of the traditional workshops. Here, you are always welcome.
Sifnos, is also known for its food and many world famous chefs have come from this island. If you visit Sifnos, do not forget to try the delicious Sifnian soup which is slowly boiled for hours in a ceramic pot.
You can get to the island by taking the ferry boat which runs on the Piraeus - Kythnos - Serifos - Milos - Kimolos line.
