The prefecture of Serres is situated in northeastern Macedonia, having a population of approximately 200,000 inhabitants. Its capital town is that of the homonymous name. The prefecture covers 3% of all of Greece and it is a popular tourist destination rich in forests and natural beauties. In the central portion there is a skiing resort, while worth of visiting is, also, the lake of Kerkini supplying water to the farmlands. Having a total area of 3,790sq.km. the prefecture is mainly agricultural, including cultivations of wheat, barley, tobacco, cotton etc.
In the small town of Alistrati you may discover one of nature’s miracles, its beautiful cave with the huge stalactites and stalagmites. Inside the cave there are countless floors, still to be examined.
If you visit the prefecture in the 21st of May, do not miss the ritual of «Anastenaria» taking place in the village of Agia Eleni. All people participating walk barefoot on burning coals as proof of true faith.
