Welcome

The island of Santorini, (also known as Thera), is situated on the southeastern tip of the Cyclades complex. It is one of the most famous holiday destinations with a total area of 73 square kilometers and a population of approximately 14,000 inhabitants. More precisely, Santorini is a small group of volcanic islands and its name was given by the Venetian in reference to Saint Irene. The island had also the names of Strongili, («Round») and Kallisti, («Most Beautiful»). A giant central lagoon is surrounded by high steep cliffs on three sides, while on the fourth side the lagoon is separated from the sea by a small island called Therasia, (with less than 300 inhabitants). Both islands were separated by the eruption of the volcano. Santorini is famous for its beautiful beaches, some of which are Perissa, Kamari and the Red Beach. Especially the latter is known for the black and red volcanic rocks. Another element of the island is the presence of the picturesque and traditional villages, (Ia, Fira and many others). The visitor coming to Santorini may find several hotels, tavernas, cafeterias, commercial shops and nightclubs. If you happen to be here in August, do not miss attending the «Ifaisteia», (Volcano), Festival which hosts various cultural and musical events, as well as a unique representation of the volcanic eruption with fireworks. Also, do not forget to try some of the local delicious dishes, such as tomato balls, eggplant dip and fava, (seasoned lentil dip).

A few words about Volcano of Santorini: Around 1500 BC. the volcano exploded and scientists believe that the eruption might be responsible for the destruction of the Minoan civilization in Crete. The last eruption took place in the year of 1956 and the volcano is still active today.
