The town of Samos, or Vathi as the locals call it, is situated on the northeastern coast of the island, at the end of the gulf of Vathi, where the harbor lies. More precisely, the harbor is located in the center of the eastern side of the bay.
With a population of approximately 8,500 inhabitants, the town is the biggest commercial center of eastern Samos with all kinds of services, such as banks, hotels, museums, restaurants etc.
The town of Samos, built amphitheatrically, retains its traditional nature. Walking around the small streets, the visitor can see many neoclassic buildings and old mansions, reminding to all the settlement’s glorious past. The combination of old and new buildings, composes a beautiful architectural style. In the middle of the waterfront is the main square, (square of Pythagoras), with its stone lion, full of tree-shaded cafeterias.
If you wish to go for swimming, the best idea is to visit the pebbled beaches of Gakos and Roditses.
