The village of Samarina is situated on the northeastern foot of mountain Smolikas. With an altitude of 1440-1540m., it is the highest village in Greece. Samarina has a population of approximately 700 inhabitants. During the winter months, the village is not inhabited, due to severe weather conditions. Nevertheless, the beautiful pine and beech forests make it an ideal destination for summer vacations. The visitor may find here a few hotels, tavernas and traditional cafeterias.
