Rethymno is one of the four prefectures of Crete, having the homonyn town Rethymno as capital. The capital is situated on the north shore of the prefecture having a sandy beach stretching along 13 km.
It is mainly a mountainous area having the most famous cretan mountain Psiloritis (or Ida) on the east. Psiloritis is the highest
mountain in all Crete (2.456 m) and is covering approximately 1/5 of the prefecture. South of the prefecture's capital, Rethymno town,
lies Mount Vrysinas and on the west Mount Kryoneritis (1312 m), which is part of the White Mountains range.
Due to the mountain terrain, there are many caves and gorges in Rethymno, and also rich valleys and rivers, who have water mainly in the winter. The climate in the area is "temperate Mediterranean" with long periods of rain that last until April and temperatures up to 30 degrees C in the summer.
Rethymnon is a place where everyone can find anything they want. There is a wide choice for accommodation ranging from luxury hotels to rooms to let, boisterous nightlife and sites worth visiting. Enjoy your vacation in Rethymno!
