Pyrgos: The village of Pyrgos is situated 5km. southeastern of Fira. It has a population of approximately 500 inhabitants and used to be the capital town of the island until the early 1800s. Pyrgos lies on the side of a hill and at the bottom the visitor can find several tavernas with local dishes, as well as souvenir shops. The village is a typical Cycladic one, with traditional white houses, surrounding the Venetian castle, and small narrow streets following the shape of the hill. The village consists, also, of many picturesque churches, 33 in total. There are various types of accommodation, cafeterias and bars to choose from.
