Pylos

Or else Navarino,on the Ionian side of Messinia, built on two lowhills, apart from the picturesque side of this small town (full of vivid colours and two –floor white houses), in the center of the port you will find a rock, the historical islet of Sfaktiria, nowadays named Marathonisi.Take notice on the arches of the buildings. You will find two castles in Pylos, Niokastro and Paleokastro. Paleokastro was built by the Franks in 1278. It has a rectangular shape, with many square and round towers. It’s exact spot that the sea battle of Navarino took place. Next to it, you will find Nestor’s cave. Niokastro was built by the Ottomans in 1573 and is divided in two levels, the upper and lower level.Inside lies aTurkish aqueduct and the ruins of the temple of Transfiguration of Christ. The center of Archeological research is based on this castle. You can pay a visit to the Antonopoulos Museum, which has findings offered by the people of Gialova and Romanos- of the 3rd millenium BC to Roman ages.
