Pano Koufonissi: Koufonissia consists of a small group of two islands, situated on the southeastern side of Naxos and on the west side of Amorgos. A straight width, (200m. long), separates Pano,(Upper), Koufonissi, from the uninhabited island of Kato, (Lower), Koyfonissi.
Pano Koufonissis has a total area of 3,5 square kilometers and a population of only 360 inhabitants. The small settlement is situated next to the port, built on the southwest coast. All houses follow the traditional Cycladic architecture. The main occupation of the locals is fishing.
The short distances between the places give to all visitors the opportunity of reaching most of the beautiful beaches. However, if you prefer, you can be taken there by a small boat.
The beach of the settlement, next to the port, is ideal for families with children, since the waters are shallow. Other beaches worth of visiting are those of Harokopou (sandy with emerald waters), Fanos, Platia Pounda, Pori, (on the northeastern side of the island), and Parianos, (sandy, protected fron the strong northern winds).
If you visit the island on the 24th of June, do not miss the «Fishermen feast», where the traditional «cacavia» is served, (a soup made of different types of fish). There is, also, dancing and singing.
