Oreokastro is the municipality that sets the northern borders of Thessaloniki. Built at an altitude of 250m and having on the north the mountain Sivri, Oreokastro is standing in the middle of a verdulous location. The 13Klm distance from the center of Thessaloniki and the natural beauty of the scenery is very luring to the inhabitants of the city for permanent residence. The first immigrants arrived here in 1922 from the villages south of Trapezunda. They were the ones who named the location (Oreokastro means beautiful castle)in memory of the castle between the villages Huts and Agios Fokas which they had left behind. The living conditions were at first very hard and the territory – as every other territory inhabited by immigrants – was underestimated.
But through the ages the inhabitants managed to create a highly estimated community that nowadays along with Panorama, Pylea and Kalamaria are considered of the most favourable suburbs in Thessaloniki. The municipality of Oreokastro is working autonomously and is consisted of eight communities, Oreokastro, Galini, Paleokastro, Asprovrisi, Amphithea, Paradisos, Pefka and Filothey. Oreokastro is linked with Lagadas, Kilkis and Derveni through the national road.
