Nissiros (Introduction): Nissiros is a small island in the Dodecanese complex, situated between Kos and Tilos. In antiquity, the island was known as Porphyris and today is a quite place that fascinates all visitors with its colorful character. Nissiros’ shape is approximately round with a diameter of about 8km and the closest airport to the island is in Kos, (a two hour boat ride away).
The island has a mountainous interior, reachable by ship from Piraeus and Kos. The coasts are generally rocky or pebbled, but there are also a few sandy beaches, such as Aspri Ammos, or Palli, a large beach with sand, pebbles and plenty of trees.
Nissiros is not known for the wildlife, but for the traditional tavernas and the friendly people. If you come, do not miss trying the traditional product called «soumada», a non-alcoholic almond-flavored drink.
The island has a very rich fauna and flora that specialists have pronounced to be unique.
One of the natural attractions, (with great scientific importance), of the island is the volcano, on its central side, near the village of Nikia. It is an active volcano with a large crater, layered with a hot surface and thick vapours. Nissiros has also therapeutic springs with good curative properties at the area of Loutra, near the capital.
