Nafpaktos, built on the hill of Agios Ilias, is situated 10km. east of Agrinio, surrounded by ever-green land. It is one of the oldest towns in Greece with a history of more than 3,500 years. In the past, Nafpaktos acquired different names, such as Epahtos, (in the Byzantine period), Lepanto, (by the Venetians) and Inebakte, (by the Turks). Today’s name derives from its ancient role as a ship-building naval colony.
Among the town’s landmarks are the Turkish mosque and the old Turkish stem baths, while on the west side of Nafpaktos, the visitor can admire the beautiful neoclassical houses. If you visit the area you will come across several traditional squares covered in big plane trees with fountains and small tavernas and cafeterias.
On top of the hill stands the Venetian castle, one f the most well preserved all around the country. From there, the visitor can enjoy the amazing view of the whole of Nafpaktos. Additionally, it is the only castle in Europe having five defending zones from the port to the top of the hill. Inside the castle there are various restaurants and bars combined perfectly with the houses following the traditional architectural style.
If you come to Nafpaktos, do not forget to visit the river Evivos where you can enjoy canoeing, rafting and kayaking. The organized sandy beaches of Psani and Gribovo are ideal for swimming and relaxation. Both have been awarded with the blue flag for having such crystal clear waters.
In Nafpaktos the visitor may find all kinds of facilities, such as hotels, cafeterias, tavernas, nightclubs and commercial shops. During summer many cultural events take place, including music, dancing, theatrical performances and art exhibitions.
