Mytilini, the capital of Lesvos,

is situated on the south-eastern coast of the island, 5km from its international airport. Mytilini is an administrative, commercial and cultural center wit h a population of approximately 40,000 inhabitants.
What makes Mytilini special, is the fact that even though it is a modern town, it retains numerous elements from the past.
The town spreads from the large harbor up to the hills, crowned by an enormous castle, one of the largest in the Mediterranean. During the summer months, a variety of cultural events are held within the fortress walls. The castle, itself, is surrounded by a pine forest reaching down to the shore.

On the far side of the harbor, the visitor can choose one of the various fish-tavernas. As the ship approaches Lesvos, a combination of old, traditional houses and contemporary buildings comes into view.
Mytilini is organized with all kinds of services and shops, such as banks, travel agencies, hotels, cafeterias, tavernas etc.

The main shopping street of the town is called Ermou, full of antique shops. Ermou extends to the northern port, (the old port), where one can see Lesvos’ own «Statue of Liberty».
