Myrina is both the capital and the port of the island, often called by the locals as Kastro.

That name is given due to the existence of a castle built over the rocky promontory of the sandy shore.
More precisely, the castle divides the waterfront of the town into two: the harbor beach on the south side and the long sandy beach of Romaikos Yalos on the north. There, several tavernas and nightclubs can be found. Just over the headline of Romaikos Yalos lies the beach of Richa Nera, (meaning «shallow waters») one of the most popular in Limnos.

Myrina, built on the same spot where the old city was located, has a population of approximately 4,500 inhabitants.
In the south part of the town the visitor can find the main shopping street with all types of small traditional shops.
