Ammoudara, which in Greek means “ huge sandy beach”, is a well developed and easily accessible tourist resort with only a few permanent residents, located about 6 kilometres West of Heraklion, very close Linoperamata, another popular tourist resort .
In Amoudara there is a wide range of lodgings, including several hotels of all categories, studios and rooms to let, as well as many tavernas restaurants and cafes for food and drink.
The beaches of Amoudara, Linoperamata and the nearby Palaeokastro are ideal for swimming and offer facilities for various sea sports.
About 6 kilometres Northwest from Ammoudara is the village of Palaeokastro where you can visit the ruins of the Venetian castle.
At a distance of 8-9 kilometres South from Amoudara are the the small villages of Ano Kalessia and Kato Kalessia where the feast of the sultana raisin, organised by the Cultural Centre of the villages, takes place in early August every year. It is worth visiting the area, which is full of vineyards, and see the church of Panaghia going back to the 14th century.
