Skala Mistegna is a fishing village situated in the eastern part of the island, 17km. from the town of Mytilini. The name Mistegna, (meaning «not dry»), is assumed to have come from the abundance of springs in the area. During the Medieval period, the village was completely out of sight, due to the presence of huge oak trees. That is the reason why the original name of the settlement was Mystika, (meaning «secretly»),

A special characteristic of Mistegna is the red stone, a building material widely used all around Lesvos.
If you come to the village, do not forget visiting the old olive-press with the big chimney. The unique monument of culture has been renovated, used, nowdays, by all locals.
