Messolongi, the capital of Etoloakarnania and the second largest town, is situated between the two rivers of Acheloos and Evenos. Built in the entry of Patraikos gulf, has a population of approximately 18,000 inhabitants. Additionally, Messolongi is one of the most glorious and historic towns of Greece. There are various versions regarding the name of the town. S.Trikoupis, (a historian and politician), supports that the name derives from «mesou-loggos», meaning «middle of shrubbery». Others believe that it derives from the Italian «mezzo-laghi», meaning «between lakes» .
Messolongi is a picturesque town with various modern elements, offering a large number of attractions to the visitor. At the entrance of the town, one can see the Exodus Gate and the «Garden of the Heroes».
Messolongi is famous for its salt-lake, the biggest all around the country. Indeed, it is under strict ecological preservation. The extensive flora and fauna create a significant ecosystem of unique beauty. The lagoon is divided into three different parts, namely that of Klesova, Messolongi and Etoliko. A visit to the small island of Etoliko will give you the opportunity of crossing the imposing stone bridge, (300m.long), built in the year of 1898).
Only 5km. away from Messolongi, the visitor can find the beautiful beach of Tourlida, ideal for swimming to the open sea of Patraikos gulf. The beach was named after a species of marine birds, the «curlews», («tourlides» in Greek).
