This is the capital town of the municipality of Kynuria and is 95klm away from Tripoli. The town is built next to a fertile lowland that produces fruits and olive-oil products. Standing just 4klm away from the coastline, it was from the ancient ages a naval town. The coastal community is called Plaka and it is the same location in which the ancient port was standing. A 4klm beach is extending up to the village Lakkos. The beach is full of visi-tora during the summer season. 4klm away from Plaka you will find the remainings of the ancient city Vrasies. The coins that were found in this location are indicative of the flourishness the city had throughout its existance, due to the port that was the link with other coastal cities. For the same reason, the city was destroyed by Periklis. Remainings of walls, castles and buildings are saved and parts of the ancient port. The name Leonidi was given after the Saint Leonidi whose corpse was awashed on the beach. The town was founded in 1826 by immigrants of the town Prastos which was destroyed by Hebraim. Leonidio is the capital center of the people who talk the Tsa-konika dialect. The city is also known of the remarkable architecture of the buildings, many of which remind of castles. One of the most beautiful buildings and of the oldest in Peloponnisos is the Tsikalioti castle, which was builted during the Ottomanic domination and is now hosting cultural events. Other buildings that are indicative of the architecture are the Polytimos castle and the three- floor castle- house of Nufris. The style is full in colours, there is much use in objects (such as pebbles) and the use of all kinds of materials in combination, such as stone and wood. Also worth to be seen are the churches in Leonidio. Don’t miss to visit the Profitis Helias small church, built on a verdulous hill on the south point of the town and the three old mills at the entrance of the town. A very spectacular traditional custom is the one that happens during Easter time every year. The inhabitants construct hu-ge balloons that set away just after the ressurection. Fine architercture, light-blue sea and red rocks lingering above are waiting for you at this corner of the world.
