Lamia is the capital town of Fthiotida, situated on the southwestern part of mountain Othris, near the river of Sperhios. More preciasely, Lamia is situated 6km. away from the Maliakos gulf, having a population of approximately 46,000 inhabitants. The town, probably owes its name to the mythological figure of Lamia, daughter of Poseidon.
On top of the hill stands the Frankish castle made out of stones taken from the ancient acropolis. The municipal buildings, hotels, cafeterias and tavernas are centered around the town’s four main squares. If you visit Lamia do not forget to try the delicious local «kourambiedes», a kind of krushed almond cookies.
