Kythnos (Introduction): Kythnos, also known as Thermia, is the first island of the coastal line of west Cyclades. Located between Kea and Serifos, it has a total area of 99 square kilometers  and a population of approximately 1,500 inhabitants. In order to get there, you can take the ferry boat from either Piraeus or Lavrio.

The terrain of Kythnos is mainly mountainous with pretty little bays on its coastline. It has more than seventy beaches, all ideal for swimming and relaxation under the shade of the «almirikia», (trees growing on the sand). Some of these have as follows: Merchas, Episkopi, Flabouria, (accessible only by boat), Agios Stefanos etc.

The island is a little bit different from the other Cycladic islands, since its architecture is quite varied and part of the villages are quite modernized.

The capital of Kythnos, known as Chora or Messaria, is situated 8km. away from Mmerichas, on a hill plateau.

The famous Wind and Solar Park is situated near the village of Messaria, where wind generators and solar energy collectors are used to provide energy to the island.

In the village of Loutra, («Baths»), the visitor can find the hot wells with sulphurous mineral spas. There, he can also choose from numerous tavernas and bars or go for swimming at the near-by pebbled beaches.

In antiquity, iron was mined in the island. Kythnos is also famous for its cheese and honey, so do not forget to buy some.
