Komotini is the capital town of the prefecture, having a population of approximately 43,000 inhabitants. It is a significant economical and administrative center combining both historical and modern elements. Komotini remains, still, an important tobacco production center. 
Land-mark is the imposing fortress built during the 4^th century A.D. Throughout the town the visitor may admire various churches and mosques, neoclassical houses and picturesque narrow streets. Around the area there is a number of traditional bridges, ideal for long, romantic walks.
The town offers a great variety of hotels, apartments, tavernas, cafeterias and commercial shops.
