Komotini is the capital town of the prefecture, having a population of approximately 43,000 inhabitants. It is a significant economical and administrative center combining both historical and modern elements. Komotini remains, still, an important tobacco production center.
Land-mark is the imposing fortress built during the 4th century A.D. Throughout the town the visitor may admire various churches and mosques, neoclassical houses and picturesque narrow streets. Around the area there is a number of traditional bridges, ideal for long, romantic walks.
The town offers a great variety of hotels, apartments, tavernas, cafeterias and commercial shops.
