Karystos is situated in the southern part of the island. It is actually a port, 128km. away from Chalkida. The town is built right below the mountain Ohi, within the famous cape of Kavo D’Oro. There are several sites and places to visit, while all tourist can find here all sort of facilities, such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias and commercial shops.
The impressive Venetian castle, known as « Castello Roso» or «Kokkinokastro», was built in the 13th century, offering a panoramic view of the town. There is also another two-storey fortress, called «Bourtsi». It is situated at the east side of the port and its building materials were, actually, taken from an ancient temple. Appreciable are the museums with important ancient exhibits, as well as the overgrowth region of Aghia Triada with the caverns. The ancient Karistos was named Cheronia and Aegeans and was famous for its wealth. Its important ruins were found near Paliochora and in Megalorema. With the many mineral spring fountains, crystal clear waters and sandy beaches, Karystos is an ideal destination for your next vacation. Every year, a wine festival takes place here, together with theatre productions, singing and traditional dancing.
