Kalambaka, once called Stagoi, (meaning «to the saints» in Greek), is a beautiful town situated at the furthermost part of the plain of Thessalia. The town is the capital of the homonymous district, overlooked by the massive rocks of Meteora, a unique geological formation. Indeed, Kalambaka is known worldwide for the monasteries built on the tops of the Meteora rocks.
In the north-eastern part of the town the visitor can find the picturesque quarter of Sopotos, encircled by the arch of the two great rocks, namely Holy Trinity and Alsos.
In Kalambaka operates the only woodcarving school in the whole of Greece. If you come to the town, do not forget to try the local products, such as honey, fruit sweets and jams. The visitor can find here several hotels, guest houses, camping grounds, restaurants, cafeterias and souvenir shops.
