Ios (Introduction): The island of Ios, or Nios as it is called by the locals, is situated half way between Naxos and Santorini. It is a famous tourist destination, well-known for its vivid nightlife. The coastline is made of mountains and hills with cliffs reaching down to the sea. Ios is only about 18km. long and 10km. wide, with a population of approximately 2,000 inhabitants. The highest mountain is called Pirgos, (713m. in height), located in the center of the island.
Ios island is also called «Little Malta» by the Greek sailors, because its port is protected from the wind. Ios, was actually the setting for the movie «Ginger and Cinnamon». The island is the most traditional and typical Cycladic architecture with white houses, narrow streets and idyllic long, sandy beaches. Most of them are almost deserted, ideal for those wishing to have a peaceful time.
There are frequent ferry links with Piraeus and the island is connected with many other islands, such as Syros, Paros, Naxos, Santorini etc.
