Ikaria, one of the biggest islands of eastern Aegean, is located between Samos and Mykonos. Ikaria, (Nikaria as the locals call it), it is about 60km. long with a perimeter of 60 miles. The island’s name derives from Ikaros, the son of the architect Daedalus. Administratively is divided into three municipalities, that of Agios Kyrikos, (32,400 inhabitants), and of Evdilos, (2,800 inhabitants). The third municipality is mountainous, Raches, with 2,200 inhabitants.
The island is mostly mountainous, crossed by the mountain chain of Atheros, (Pramnos).
In the north-east part of Ikaria there is an airport with regular flights to and from Athens. The majority of the villages are located in the valleys near the seaside and only a few are on the mountains.
Ikaria is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the Aegean, the best sandy ones being on the north coast. On the other hand, on the south coast the visitor can find some less crowded coves.
If you visit the island, do not forget to taste of «Pramnios oinos», a strong red wine.
