Evritania is the most thickly wooded, best-watered region in the country, situated in the center of Sterea Ellada. In fact, the region is also known as «The Switzerland of Greece». The name of Evritania derives from the mythical king Evritos and the area is world-wide known for its rich natural beauty and inspiring scenery. The capital of Evritania is Karpenissi, being situated at the foothills of mountain Timfristos. It is believed that it owes its name to the maple trees growing in the area during the 12th century. If you visit Karpenissi do not forget to try the delicious feta cheese roasted in wax paper, as well as the local sausages and goat butter.
