The town of Etoliko is situated to the north of the Acheloos delta, accessed by a road connecting Astakos, Preveza and Messologi. In order to reach Messologi, you shall have to cross the beautiful stone bridge, (300m. long), built in the year of 1898. Until it became a part of Greece, Etoliko was known by the name of Anatoliko, (meaning «east» in Greek).
Etoliko is also called the «small Venice of Greece», since it is set on a small island surrounded by rocky bushy hills and farmland. A large tract of land is under nature protection and, thus, hunting is banned. More than 170 bird species can be found here. Of economical significance is the saltworks, situated to the east, about 100m. away from the sea.
There are several rooms to let, tavernas and cafeterias, all following the traditional architectural style. If you visit Etoliko, do not forget to try the local specialities of smoked or salted avgotaracho, (the egg of the fish kefalos), worldwide known for its unique taste.
