Ermoupolis: Ermoupolis is situated on the east coast of the island, being the capital town, not just of Syros, but of the entire Cyclades complex. It is also a commercial and cultural center of unique architectural beauty. Ermoupoli owes its name to Hermes, the god of trade. The town is built amphitheatrically, full of old mansions, marble paved streets and preserved neoclassical buildings. No wonder it used to be called «Little Milan» and the «Duchess of the Aegean».
The magnificent Miaouli square is one of the most beautiful ones all over Greece. A huge palm tree shadows several small cafeterias and restaurants. There, the visitor can also find the building of the Town Hall, being designed by the Bavarian architect Ziller. Worth visiting is, also, the Apollo Theatre, (found in Vardaki square), designed by the French architect Chabeau. The theatre is a miniature of the famous La Scala of Milan and used to house many world wide known artists.
In Ermoupolis, the visitor can find all kinds of facilities, including hotels, tavernas and night clubs.
