Eretria is situated at the southwestern coast of Evia, only 20km. away from Chalkida. Due to its geographical position, it is a passage to south Evia. Eretria stretches along the west end of a narrow coastal plain. To the north, the settlement is surrounded by the mountain chain of Euboean Olympos, while to the east is dominated by mountain Servouni. The visitor can find here a vast choice of hotels, cafeterias, tavernas and bars. The town owns its name to the ancient Greek word «Eretmon», meaning «oarsman». It is a place of natural beauty and archaeological interest, focused on the temple of Dimitra, the temple of Dionysius and the temple of Apollo. Visitors can also find the ruins of an ancient theatre and residues of the ancient citadel, such as baths, graves, residences, big buildings, etc., where archaeologists discovered distinctive "vessels" of Eretria, some of which are saved in the Archaeological Museum of Athens.
