Emborio: Emborio is situated on the south part of the island with a population of approximately 1,800 inhabitants. Approaching the village from the west, the visitor can admire the line of the old windmills standing on the hillside. Half a way up the village, there are the ruins of the fortress, while at the northern part stands the impressive square tower, known as Goulas. The tower was built during the Ottoman occupation, in order to protect the people from the invasions of pirates. Due to the development of tourism, the village has been expanded, tending to join the nearby resort of Perissa at the east. Here, a variety of hotels, tavernas, cafeterias and commercial shops can be found. Emborio is a traditional village with very narrow streets and white houses climbing on the slope. If you happen to visit the settlement on the 22nd of October, do not miss attending the local feast in honor of Agios Averkios, the protector of wine.
