Edessa: Edessa is the capital town of the prefecture, being built on top of the ancient ruins. With a population of approximately 18,000 inhabitants, it is a town with intense the element of water, (with many rivers and waterfalls). That is the reason why until the year of 1923 it was called Vodena, («Voda» meaning «water» in Slav).
Of unique beauty is the town clock, made out of stone, being built in the year of 1900 in the heart of Edessa. Of course everyone is aware of the wonderful waterfalls, falling from a height of 70 meters. If you love walking in nature , do not miss the opportunity of visiting the forest of Gavoliotissa, only 3km. away from the capital town.
Edessa offers a great variety of sports, such as rafting, (in the river of Moglenitsa), trekking, cycling and many more. Every year several cultural events are organized here, including musical and theatrical performances. Popular is, also, the wine festival taking place in June.
