Astypalea Town, (Chora): Astypalea Town, the capital, consists of two parts. There is Skala, (or Pera Yalos), the old town which curls down towards the beach, and Chora, the upper town. Pera Yalos offers most basic  amenities such as cafes, public facilities and an ATM. Ferries dock at the harbor of Pera Gialos where a steep road goes up to the capital Chora.
Chora is a beautiful town with white houses, a line of nine windmills and an impressive Venetian castle of the 14th century. Chora isbuilt on a peninsula where two tranquil bays are formed, Pera Yalos and Livadi.
