Ano Syros: Ano Syros is situated on the northwest side of the island, (4km. away from Ermoupolis), built by the Venetians on top of the hill of  Agios Georgios. The village consist of white houses with colored doors, (influenced by the Venetian architecture), and narrow streets. More precisely, all houses are built on top of each other, forming thus a defensive fortress with wooden balconies.
Ano Syros is a natural fortress with some of the gates of the old castle still remaining. The small, narrow stone-paved streets, together with arched passages, used to be hunting places for the inhabitants.
Ano Syros is the birthplace of the famous «rebetiko» composer, singer and bouzouki master Markos Vamvakaris. («Rebetiko», is an underground music imported by the refugees of Asia Minor.)
On the «Piatsa», the village’s main street, the visitor can find several tavernas, cafeterias and commercial shops.
