Amfissa is the capital town of Fokida with a population of approximately 12,000 inhabitants. It is also known as Salona, which was the medieval name of the town. Amfissa is situated south of Lamia, 13k. north of the port of Ikea. More precisely, it lies between the mountains of Giona, (to the west), and Parnassos, (to the east). People believe that the name of the town derives either from the ancient Greek verb «amfiennymi», meaning «surround», (as it is surrounded by nountains), or from the daughter of king Makaros, Amfissa. Every year several cultural events take place here, attracting visitors from all over the world.
The town retains its traditional atmosphere and on the center one can find the main square surrounded by traditional buildings, once belonging to the families of aristocracy. Throughout the town there are many old mansions and neoclassical buildings adorned with plaster decoration and wall paintings of local artists. Its Frnkish fortress perches on top of an imposing rock, surrounded by olive trees. The visitor can find in Amfissa a great range of hotels, tavernas, cafeterias and bars. If you happen to be in the town, do not forget to try the delicious local olives
