The town of Ambelonas, (meaning «vineyard» in Greek), is situated 13km. to the south of Larissa. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture and especially in the cultivation of vines, wheat and fruit. Ambelonas is a modern town with a population of approximately 8,400 inhabitants, retaining, thus, its traditional character.
Every year, during the last week of August or the first week of September, a wine festival takes place here. Hundreds of wine companies all over Greece gather to show off their products. There is also traditional music and dancing, several cultural events and, of course, plenty of free wine. So, if you come do not miss that great opportunity. In Ambelonas, the visitor may find several traditional tavernas and cafeterias.
