Welcome to ASTROLABE HOTEL

The hotel“Astrolabe” is the name of a historical astronomical instrument, which was used by seamen and astronomers in navigation and observation of the sun and stars, from 2nd century B.C. up to 18th century A.D.

The hotel was named “Astrolabe”, because at clear nights, one can observe from here details of the starry skies above the Euboean Gulf and the Aegean even by the naked eye.
Built with respect for the urban architectural tradition of Euboea, the “Astrolabe” hotel is located in the hamlet of Chronia, which lies 4 klm outside of the town of Limni to the north-west, at 150 metres from the sea side, so that in quiet evenings of the Euboean one can even hear the water wash against the beach.
The “Astrolabe” offers year-round reposeful friendliness to each visitor, where the sky, the sea, and the neighbourly mountain affluent in euboean flora, interconnect.

Local area
The hamlet of Chronia, where the “Astrolabe” hotel is located, belongs in the Municipality of Elymnion, that is named after an ancient town which flourished in the local area. ‘Nymphic Elymnion’, as it is referred to in extracts from Sophocles, is connected with the first coupling of Zeus and Hera, and the area offers interesting archeological spots.
Chronia is situated at 4 klm from the local main town, Limni, right next to the famous beaches of western Euboea.
Limni is a picturesque, amphitheatrical settlement, built on the hilly coast of the North Euboean Gulf. Its name means “lake” in greek, thanks to the always calm bay on which it abuts.
Limni maintains an island character and the glamour of the old sea masters, combined with neoclassic architectural elements of the 19th and 20th centuries that can be seen on its mansions and tile roofed houses.
Limni is an 85km drive from Halkida, Euboea’s capital.
Beaches
The “Astrolabe” hotel stands only 150 metres from the coast, and from here one can almost savour the lustrous, cool waters of the ever calm North Euboean Gulf.
Numerous quiet pebbly beaches, longer or smaller, often solitary even during August, stretch all along the way to Aedipsos over some 30 klm of coastline.
The large, fashionable Kohyli beach, 2 km away from Limni, has golden sand and is ideal for water sports.
At fairly short distances by car from the hotel, right past Aedipsos, one can find the sandy beaches of Gialtra or Gregolimano on the Euboean coast (west); or the beach of Agia Anna on the Aegean coast (east).
Sightseeing
• The waterfalls of the river Sipias in Drymonas make up a spot of particular natural beauty and ecological value. The water plunges from 15 metres’ height into a crystal lake surrounded by dense fir forest and black pines. A journey among lush, wild vegetation and a swim in the waterfalls during summertime provide extra motivations for a visit. The waterfalls are located at an altitude of 620 m, 4 km after the cloister of St. David’s through the road setting out of Rovies.
• A unique natural monument is a petrified forest of at least 20 million years of age, near the village of Kerasia. It is one of the richest petrified forests in all Europe. Stony trunks of gigantic trees are visible in the part of the forest that has been bared. Some findings of the regional fauna are exhibited at the Fossils Museum of Kerasia.
• A venetian tower, example of the period of the frank occupation, built by Guillaume II de Villehardouin between 1255 and 1258, dominates the nearby village of Rovies.
• In Limni the History & Folklore Museum presents findings of the classic, hellenistic and roman periods, as well as the historical archives of the town.
• The church of Zoodohos Pigi (Life-Giving Source) with mosaics of the 5th century and the church of Theotokos (Virgin Mary), with an imposing belfry since 1837, are also located in Limni.
• 5 km away from the town of Limni one can visit the Museum of Marine Biology, with remarkable rare exhibits from the sea world.
• During the local festivities for the Naval Week, the rich naval history of the region is revived in the “Elymnia” events in Limni each summer.
• At the Women's Handicraft Cooperative of Limni on can find traditionally woven textiles and other products of the local cultural heritage.

Activities
Thanks to the diversity of its countryside, the region offers opportunities for athletic, as well as mild activities in the nature, on land or in the sea, throughout the year.
• Hiking or trekking on the neighboring mountains, Telethrio, Kavallaris and Xero, through an abundant fir forest. Natural footpaths exist on all three mountains. Also scenic footways connect the waterfalls site at Drymonas to the top of Mt Xero and St. David’s cloister.
The Arapis Gorge near Agia Anna is also worth visiting, for its untamed beauty.
• Mountaineering in the stony beauty of Mt Kandili.
• Watching the opulent local flora, that comprises 1824 different kinds of plants. In Euboea 42 endemic plant species have been identified, i.e. not to be found anywhere else on the planet. But also the bird fauna of the region is prolific and infrequent.
• Bicycling on the countless rural roads of the region. A very particular choice is a plateau that lies past the waterfalls at Drymonas.
• Motor vehicling. A number of charted routes exist among the exuberant vegetation of the mountains. There are also ideal off-road routes for 4X4’s and two-wheelers.
• Windsurfing at Kohyli beach. Thanks to local thermal phenomena in Limni’s bay, the winds that blow daily always ensure ideal conditions for surfing fans.
